More VCs Recognizing The Problems Of Our Patent System

Back in December, it was great to see a VC, Greg Blonder, point out why he felt patents hurt innovation , while also taking his fellow VCs to task for their excessive interest in patents. When VCs are investing in companies they're always hoping for some sort of "sustainable competitive advantage" and too often they incorrectly believe (or, perhaps, they just want to believe) patents represent evidence of a sustainable competitive advantage.

On "Serious" Blogging

Rice begins by referring to the "Ivan Tribble" articles in The Chronicle of Higher Education , asserting that "Too many academic bloggers have taken Tribble and similar commentaries seriously" then makes an initial overture to his central point, his concern regarding "the general seriousness that has immediately encased a fairly novel form of writing." In short, it seems to me that Rice is really saying not, "don't take blogging so seriously," but "why aren't you all more like me?"

Back when Google went public in 2004, there was a lot of talk about how it would open up the IPO market for tech companies again... but that turned out to be wrong. To really open up the market again, there would need to be a lower profile, but still well known, company to successfully hit the market. While there has been some talk about how slow the tech IPO market has been there certainly have been some companies going public. There were no "brand name" tech firms going public.

While they've decided to pretend they never brought up the idea of an .xxx domain , ICANN did move forward with plans to add a .asia top level domain to all of the other top level domains that companies don't want, but will be forced to buy. All the countries in Asia already have their own TLD, of course. Like almost all of the other TLDs ICANN has approved, these aren't needed and only serve to make companies feel like they have to buy more domains.
